Can you bring kids to the lodge?

We welcome children 10 years and older at Mthembu

Can you come for day visits only?

Unfortunately not, unless an event is pre-arranged.

Can I drive to the reserve and on safari?

If you have a 4×4 vehicle, you can self-drive to the lodge. If you don’t, we can arrange transfers to the lodge within working hours. Once at the reserve, only trained guides drive game vehicles on the protected area.

Is the reserve malaria free?

Yes, although guests are advised to use mosquito repellent and avoid being bitten.

When is the best time to visit?

The dry season is from May to September, in winter and the wet season is summer, from November to March. The heat at the height of summer can be extremely hot, but winters are mild.

What type of accommodation is available?

There are standalone superior, luxury suites and family suites available.

Do I need binoculars?

It is advisable to have a pair for birding and game viewing.

What should I pack for safari?

Cool safari clothes are most suitable, with a warm jacket for night drives. South Africa enjoys a mild and temperate climate, and even more so here in the magnificent Northern Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal. Light, comfortable cotton and natural fabric clothing is best, and in styles suitable for layering. A bathing costume for sunny days and a warm jacket for chilly evenings are a must. A comfortable pair of closed walking shoes and open sandals are recommended in the summer months. Sunscreen, insect repellent, a hat, sunglasses, a camera and a pair of binoculars will ensure an even better stay!

How long is an average stay?

To get the full experience we would suggest a minimum of 2 to 3 days.

Are children allowed on safari?

The wilderness experience is only suitable for children older than 10 years.

Are the lodges suitable for disabled travellers?

Unfortunately, the game vehicles are not adapted to accommodate disabled travellers.

How far in advance should I book my stay?

It is advisable to book at least three to six months in advance to secure the dates you prefer.

What are the cancellation times and rates?

Cancellations must be advised in writing.
30–15 days prior to arrival will result in 50% of the total cost being withheld.
14 days prior to arrival will result in 100% of the total booking cost withheld.

Do all the lodges offer plunge pools?

Both lodges have communal swimming pools. At Biyela, 10 of the suites have private infinity pools.

What times are check-in and check-out?

Check in is from 14:00 and check out at 10:00.

Where is the nearest airport?

There is a local airport at Richards Bay which is 73 km from the reserve. King Shaka International Airport is the closest for international flights and is 204 km away.

Are all meals and drinks included in the rate?

Yes, all meals and snacks, as well as local beverages and house wines are included in the rate. Premium brands are also available but will be for the guest’s own account.
